The Boston Herald plans to lay off 130 to 160 workers as the daily newspaper outsources its printing operations.

Herald owner and publisher Patrick Purcell said Tuesday that the newspaper is shifting printing work outside the company because most of its presses are 50 years old and in poor condition. He says outsourcing is the best option for now.

Beginning this fall, the Herald will be printed six days a week at a Dow Jones Co. plant in Chicopee, about 90 miles west of Boston. Saturday editions will be printed in Norwood at a press owned by Boston Offset because the Chicopee plant is occupied with other work on Friday nights.

Purcell says all the workers to be laid off are unionized print-shop employees.
