A Tennessee man who has spent 22 years on death row is due to appear in court Friday for a bail hearing that could set him free.
Paul House has been on death row since 1986 for the slaying of a young mother in Union County.
But in 2006, the U.S. Supreme Court concluded he would not have been convicted based on evidence that emerged years after his trial. Another federal judge has ruled House must be retried for the crime by June 17 or be released.
District Attorney Paul Phillips has pledged to retry House in Carolyn Muncey’s murder but won’t seek the death penalty again.
House has multiple sclerosis and must use a wheelchair. His lawyer says he isn’t a flight risk or a danger to the community.
