BJP and Congress play Tom and Jerry in Indian Politics

Tom and Jerry, the famous cartoon shows feature fights between perennial enemies, a house cat and mouse. BJP and Congress, the two iconic political parties act like Tom and Jerry in Indian politics. Tom and Jerry play their defined roles without swapping their positions, but in the case of BJP and Congress role reversal is possible, sometimes Congress will act as Tom and BJP as Jerry and vice a versa depending upon which party is in power.

In Tom and Jerry episodes, the plots of each shot usually centre on Tom’s numerous attempts to capture Jerry. In the same fashion both political parties do not let any opportunity to go to catch each other on the wrong foot.

When the Congress led government was cornered after revelation of various scams, BJP demanded resignation of its tainted ministers. Maharashtra CM Ashok Chavan and Telecom minister A Raja were forced to resign. Soon after this Congress demanded scalp of Karnataka CM Yeddurappa from BJP in land scam involving his family members.

Tom tries everything from axes, firearms, explosions, traps and poison to kill Jerry. BJP also tries everything from explosion using 26 year-old Bofors gun, Arrows tipped with price rise poison and onion induced tear gas shells to kill Congress. Like Tom cat BJP is usually outwitted by Congress. Assemanand’s confession pointing to the involvement of Hindu radicals in terror act in the country came as a stick in the hands of Congress to beat BJP with. In some episodes Tom and Jerry acts become too gory when they slice each other in half. The national parties also pounce upon each other in Parliament and create mayhem in the august House. They use unparliamentary language and sometimes invective, keep on trading charges and perennially chase each other like cartoon characters.

BJP refuses to relent on its demand for JPC probe into 2G spectrum scam , Congress on the other hand has decided to strike back by making startling revelations about the gamut of telecom policy since 2000 including beneficiaries during the BJP led NDA regime. In the past also, from time to time BJP has been supplying fodder for Congress canons in the form of ‘loose’ statements of their stalwarts like Advani and Jaswant Singh. BJP’s attack on Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi in the Bofors case is rebuffed by Congress party by way of counter attack on BJP for Sadhvi Pragya's terrorist act. Like Tom and Jerry both Congress and BJP watch each other’s moves very closely. Statement of one party is immediately contradicted by the other on the national television.

In Tom and Jerry games it is the house that suffers the most. The entire house is turned upside down in their fight. Household goods are broken, furniture set on fire without any regard for other members of the house. It is aam aadmi who suffers the most in the fierce battle for power between the two national parties. The entire Parliament session was scraped on JPC demand. It’s taxpayers’ money that goes down the drain because of lock jam. Tom and Jerry’s fight is unending so is of BJP and Congress without giving a damn for the problems faced by the country and its citizens. If next time BJP comes to power the role of Tom cat will be enacted by the Congress party.Tom and Jerry acts create fun and amuse us, but the games national parties play evoke feelings of their callousness towards difficulties faced by common public.
