Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown drew the No. 4 post and was made the 1-2 favorite for Sunday’s $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park.

A field of seven 3-year-olds was entered Thursday for the Grade 1 Haskell, with Big Brown set for his first start since finishing last in the Belmont Stakes in his bid to become the first Triple Crown winner since 1978.

Big Brown has been training well for the Haskell, and posted a sizzling six-furlong workout in 1:10.96 at Aqueduct on Saturday.

“They are saying that was one of the best workouts laid down at Aqueduct,” said Mike Iavarone, the co-president of IEAH Stables, the majority owner of Big Brown. “We couldn’t be happier with the way he’s coming into the race.”

Also entered are two horses trained by Nick Zito in Cool Coal Man and Coal Play, along with Alaazo, Atoned, Magical Forest and Nistle’s Crunch. Zito’s Da’ Tara won the Belmont.

Cool Coal Man, who drew the No. 2 post, is the 4-1 second choice, with Atoned at 6-1 and Coal Play at 8-1.

Trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. still has no explanation for Big Brown’s poor performance in the Belmont, when the colt looked uncomfortable at the start and was pulled up by jockey Kent Desormeaux with a quarter-mile to go.

“I see the horse doing very, very good,” Dutrow said this week. “I just can’t see him doing anything other than run his race. I don’t know why he wouldn’t.”

Big Brown, who will be ridden by Desormeaux, won his first five starts by a combined 39 lengths before the Belmont.

The Haskell, a 1 1-8 miles, is the top race of the Monmouth Park season.

Ken McPeek, who trains Nistle’s Crunch, says other than Big Brown the field is wide open.

“If Big Brown is not on his A game, we obviously want to be there to pick the up pieces,” McPeek said. “As the Belmont showed, anything can happen.”
