Belgium Could Be First To Ban Burqa In Europe

POLITICS. .

France has been threatening to for a long while, Quebec, Canada is also considering it, but it looks as if Belgium will be the first to ban burqas and I say, bravo! They will be the first European country to ban one of the most ridiculous outfits ever to be designed by man. And I'm sure it was a man. Of course, there will be the usual uproar that is elicited when something Muslim is banned, like the minaret in Switzerland, even though it was just the minaret not mosques that were affected. And even though there was hardly a whimper when Egypt banned the niqab in various venues, this should get the usual suspects going for a while.

So, again, no-one is banning veils, just the full-face ones that the "black widow" suicide bombers in Russia love to wear. That along with those full flowing black gowns that easily hide those suicide bombs. There's a reason people find them offensive, as offensive as I find people walking around half nude. If these women don't want to be seen, then perhaps they should stay home and have someone else go out and do their shopping for them, because wearing those things makes them stand out even more. I am always going to wonder if one of them has a bomb hidden under all that cloth. Sorry, but that's human nature. Maybe not pre/911 but now, oh yes indeed.

But back to Belgium, the parliament will vote on the ban in late April, even though they all agreed to the ban at a meeting yesterday.

There are an estimated 650,000 Muslims in Belgium – 6 per cent of the population.

The text of the new law does not specifically mention burkas but makes it illegal for anyone to wear clothing ‘that covers all or most of the face’ in any public place.

Left-wing MP Denis Ducarme left no doubt the rules were targeting-Muslim extremists.

He said after the vote by the home affairs committee: ‘This sends a very strong signal to radical Islamists.’

The French- speaking liberals who have proposed the law argue that an inability to identify people presents a security risk and that the veil is a ‘walking prison’ for women.

Daniel Bacquelaine, the bill’s chief promoter, said the ban might also be used against potentially violent demonstrators who covered their faces.

He estimated that only a few hundred women in Belgium wore facial veils, but said it was a rising trend. The MP said Belgium did not wish to follow the ‘bad examples’ of Britain and the Netherlands, where he said many Muslims lived in separate communities.

The proposal is expected to become law as early as June as it has the support of all five parties in the coalition government. But opponents may appeal to the European Court of Human Rights.

Interesting that even the liberals are for the ban, but Muslims can thank the extremists in their midst for what is happening these days. It's great that clerics and scholars are finally condemning jihad and violence, but it's a little too late. Too many have already been radicalized before they had the courage to pipe in with fatwas against violence. It's going to be a long, dark road to get things back to normal, if that's ever possible. IN the meantime, the West is going to do what it needs to stem the growth of fundamentalism, and if it happens to infringe upon your rights to wear what you want, too bad. I wouldn't look twice at a woman walking down the street, put a burqa or even a hijab on their heads and I immediately want to stare. So, if wearing a veil or niqab or burka is your way of trying to get people not to notice you, guess what? It's doing the opposite.

So, this is what will happen if you wear a burqa in public: you could face prison time, a week in jail (and I'm sure sans your veil) or a fine. Hopefully this will stem the rise of burqa-wearing women and men (if they have something evil in their minds).
