Avatar Nominated for 9 Academy Awards
Just $2million shy of breaking his previous Titanic domestic box office record, director James Cameron got a boost today when Oscar nominations were announced. Avatar received nine nominations:
Art Direction
Cinematography
Directing
Film Editing
Music (Original Score)
Best Picture
Sound Editing
Sound Mixing
Visual Effects
The film's nomination total is tied with The Hurt Locker, which was directed by Cameron's ex-wife whom is a serious contender to be the first woman ever to win Best Direction (a prize no doubt Cameron covets a second time around). Hurt Locker nods:
Actor in a Leading Role
Cinematography
Directing
Film Editing
Music (Original Score)
Best Picture
Sound Editing
Sound Mixing
Writing (Original Screenplay)
Avatar's total fell short of Titanic's tie-record 14 nominations, and the epic tragedy won more Oscars - 11 - than Avatar has been nominated for. Avatar has no actor nominations, for instance. And the film is not expected to win any big awards - such as Best Picture - but will likely clean house in the technical and art direction/effects categories.
But Avatar is beating Titanic at the box office. It has already sunk its previous worldwide record of $1.82billion and in the process has become the first film to past the $2billion mark. And as of last night, Avatar's domestic total $598million and it will certainly surpass Titanic's $600million grossing here as well by today most likely and become America's #1 movie eventually. At its current pace, it may reach $700million.
