ATS: Playing with fire, Sadhvi Pragya case
I do not wish to delve into the politics behind the arrest of Sadhvi Pragya and others. However, I am surprised over the approach of ATS. A responsible agency like ATS should have kept in mind the procedures involved in criminal investigations. It should have kept in mind that it should not have surrendered itself to third-degree treatment while dealing with a person enjoying religious authority.

I remember very well that even Sri Shankracharya of Kanchi was handled roughly by the police. She certainly deserves better treatment. The ATS should not forget the fact that such brutal treatment meted out to Sadhvi Pragya could leave unhealthy impact on Hindu community which at present, like all other times, is in wait-and-watch mode!
Well, one can imagine the plight of ordinary culprits if its not afraid to beat saint black and blue. It seems to have forgotten the fact that she is mere a suspect and has not been pronounced guilty. It also seems to have sidelined the fact that such forced confessions have no value in the eyes of court.
Well, if you enter in the premises of any Police Station, you will never miss to notice the chart depicting the rights of people arrested. What’s the use of things written in the chart when Police is more interested in pursuing its cruel unwritten rules?
Worse, we seem to have become mute spectators. I don’t expect anything better from so-called secular community, for whom injustice with the minorities alone constitutes crime. Anything happening with majority is not worth responding!
Even the Human Rights Commission, which comes into action soon, has responded only after Sadhvi’s allegation in affidavit as a face-saving gesture! I don’t know when National Commission for Women is going to deliver its sound byte? As per her allegations she was compelled to watch X-rated movie.
One can imagine what would be the state of affairs in the lives of other women prisoners. It’s time for other sane individuals to protest against the atrocities of ATS. I am not saying that law should be twisted to protect Sadhvi. Let it take its normal course. However, I am taken aback over the method of investigation. It’s time for the Court and conscious people to set the record straight in this sensitive issue.
