Assassination Attempt on Female Parliamentarian Fails
A member of Afghan Parliament from the northern province of Badakhshan and a women rights activist, Fawzia Kofi escaped an assassination attempt in the eastern part of Kabul while traveling from the neighboring city of Jalalabad back to Kabul.
Ms. Kofi along with her security convoy came under severe gun fire attack of light weapons in the locality of “Tangi Abraishum” in the east of Kabul.
According to Ms. Kofi in response Security forces returned fire and in a matter of minutes the gun battle turned to the use of ‘Heavy Weapons’ by the attackers.
Fawzia Kofi said, “Police forces fought the attackers for 30-45 minutes, I think one of our brave policemen got wounded too, but thanks God we reached Sorobi safe and then we were carried to Kabul by Helicopter.”
Ms. Kofi believes that the attackers were part of the Taliban militant group and they had planned to attack her since the night before.
She said that the interior ministry is carrying out an investigation into the incident.
