Rookie Greg Smith threw a four-hitter, Eric Chavez hit a two-run double, and the Oakland Athletics beat Los Angeles 6-1 on Monday night to pull within 3 1/2 games of the Angels in the AL West.

Smith (5-6) struck out three and walked two in his second complete game in 16 big league starts. It was his first victory in six starts against AL West teams. He threw 101 pitches.

Jon Garland (7-5) was charged with four runs _ two earned _ and eight hits in six-plus innings. He struck out six.

Chavez, a Gold Glove third baseman, was 1-for-5 as the DH after missing the San Francisco series with a sore right shoulder.
