A state prosecutor's office has requested an arrest warrant for Mexican pop singer Kalimba, who is facing charges of sexually abusing a minor in a Quintana Roo hotel room.
Two underage teens working as hostesses at a Kalimba gig on Dec. 18 claim they were raped by the pop icon at an after-party in Chetumal, a port city south of Cancun. Authorities also have requested the arrest of Kalimba's promoter Gerard Michelle Manuel Aguilar, who allegedly played a role in hiring the the 16- and 17-year old.
Kalimba, whose full name is Kalimba Kadjaly Marichal Ibar, launched a solo career in 2004 after a successful run as a member of the teen pop group OV7. He also has appeared in several Mexican film and television programs.
State prosecutor Francisco Alor Quezada told reporters Monday that after gathering evidence from both sides, the rape charge of one of the alleged victims was solid enough to move forward with the arrest warrant.
Kalimba has denied the charges. In a recent interview with the Televisa network, he said his accusers made incongruent claims in their initial statements, however, he acknowledges that he was with the teens in a nearby hotel room, where the private after-party was held.
"You should know that I'm not proud of everything I do, that I fail, I fall down and I sin." Kalimba recently tweeted. "But I definitely didn't do what I'm being accused of."
A recently reformed law in the Gulf coast state of Quintana Roo mandates longer sentences for rape convictions, ranging from 25 to 50 years in prison.
