African countries should just do away with elections

POLITICS. .

My thinking is not one of the best and most people would term it retrogressive, but of course i have a reason why i think holding elections in Africa is just a waste of tax payers money and precious time which we could use to earn more for paying the huge painful taxes.

Ethiopia has just held elections, but as usual the opposition is seeking a re-run after allegations of flawed and unfair elections Head of the main opposition coalition Merera Gudina said he will not accept the results, which gave Prime Minister Meles Zenawi a landslide victory. On the same note the EU and US have both criticised the elections, saying they fell short of international standards.

African elections have perfectly and comfortably earned the reputation of being unfair and flawed. Kenya seems to have set the precedent in 2007.... Do not forget we are still seeking justice for the atrocities committed after the disputed elections. Zimbabwe was second in line, they were also saved by the hurriedly cooked deals in the name of coalition governments but still the so called coalition partners don't care the way they nurture their 'marriages' even in public, Mugabe and Tsvangirai recently in Tanzania showed how uncomfortable they were with each other's presence. I am even going too far citing the two Raila and Kibaki back here have on several occasions washed their dirty linen in public. Sudan is another one which has earned some 'accolades' in this field, Al Bashir declared himself the winner amid protests from the opposition but he is the president and was one.

Uganda is preparing to go to elections next year but the incumbent President Museveni has declared that he is preparing his son to take over power, and remember.. the same man bribed the legislators to scrap the term limit of the president meaning he can as well go ahead and seek leadership again and again. We are partly glad that our constitution is categorical that a president can only run for two terms. Personal rule is an element that has continued to haunt Africa before and after independence, leaders are never ready to relinquish power or leave offices for others democratically whether the citizens have shown them the door or not. It's a sad situation even in these times we claim to be modern and nurturing democracy. Every time progress is made the continent has to go back to the drawing board due to selfish leaders hungry for power. For the sake of peace we are better of without elections.
