Elections 2009, Women Candidates...Facts & Figures

With the elections 2009 approaching faster, it is interesting to learn that over 300 women are taking part to make it into the provincial council and the presidency. Among them 300 are Provincial Council Candidates, 5 vice presidential candidates while 2 are fighting for the top slot of the country i.e., presidency.

These Afghan women come from differnt backgrounds. Most of them, of course, have a working background. Interestingly, in a deeply conservative country like Afghanistan young people affiliated to the singing field from the female gender have come forth like Farida Tarana who gained popularity after availing the platform of Tolo TV's singing talent show "Afghan Star". She is playing her popularity card to win a seat in the provincial council of her province. While others have largely been unknown figures in Afghanistan women like Fatima Naeemi with a religio-polical background are balanced candidates to make a difference in the outcome of upcoming elections. Women participation has been restricted though, yet welcome for better democractic practices in Afghanistan.
