Afghan Parliament Orders the Presence of Attorney General in the House
The waves of political clashes between the presidency and the parliament appeared to recede when President Karzai bowed down before an unbearably huge pressure exerted upon him by the forces inside and outside his country to inaugurate the so-called democratically elected parliament, the elections for which were marred with massive corruption, voter’s intimidation, ballot staffing and use of arms and forces. Ironically, equally corrupt and illegitimate were the presidential elections.

Since its formal inauguration, the two sides have failed to come to terms. This puts the fate of at least 80 parliamentarians to doubt as on a presidential decree just before the inauguration of the new parliament was a Special Court established to look into the affairs of corruption during the September elections that brought an unexpectedly high number of non-pashtoons to the parliament.

In the most recent waves of events, the Attorney General of Afghanistan Ishaq Algo was asked to appear before the parliament and answer queries of the representatives of the nation on such issues. He was more specifically asked to appear and remain answerable for his recent move of handing over documents against the accused parliamentarians to the special court. However, he has declined his presence and has written to the parliament regretting his absence and giving reasons as per the books of law. The parliamentarians, who are supposed to formulate laws, have not accepted his interpretations and ordered him to appear for tough sessions of question and answers.
This has led to the boiling point between the two sides. Mr. Algo has been called in with no choice of saying ‘No’ again. It’s now a test time on the relations of the presidency and the parliament. And this act will definitely lead to new avenues of opposition and diversion on every issue between the parliament and the presidency.
