In a bid to protect the sea environment, a group of about 20 youths from Majaoni Trading Center in the outskirts of Mombasa city in Kenya have embarked on a very captivating project. The youths have been planting Mangrove on the shores of Mtwapa Creek,about 3 Kms from Mombasa GK Prison in Shimo La Tewa on the Malindi-Mombasa highway.
The group was started in early 2003 with an aim of protecting the sea environment after it became clear that people were encroaching in this highly protected areas and cutting mangrove. According to the group secretary Mr. David Taura, the group has so far planted over 30,000 mangroves on the shore of Majaoni in the northern city of Mombasa.
“We have a plan but due to lack of funds, we are not able to finish all our goals about changing the nature in this sea.” Said Taura as he took me around an area where they have been planting the mangrove and rearing the seedlings.
Their efforts have so far attracted many environmentalists but a fund is far more to come. “We have been receiving many environmentalists but many of them are leaving here with promises to be fund us later. Kenya Wildlife services (KWS) has also been supportive through its marine department.
