Paul, the genius psychic Octopus who became celebrity during FIFA World Cup 2010 is no more. Who says only humans can predict, animals are equally proficient and gifted to see into the future. Paul, the eight-legged Octopus has proved it beyond doubt each time picking winning team before start of the game. Sometimes he picked Germany over Uruguay and sometimes Spain over the Netherlands, shocking to some but always correct.
As a celb, Paul too had fans and critics. The teams that lost in the world cup wanted to cut him to pieces and roast him for sumptuous dinner. On the other side, even head of Spanish Government offered to send security guards to protect him from the infuriated Germans. In the hind sight the Germans were not wrong. Paul was living in Germany and was feeding on German food; still he predicted German team’s defeat at the hands of Spaniards. How atrocious! Jis thali mai khaya usi mai chhaid kar diya.
Paul was criticized for spreading superstition, but his fans outnumbered his critics. A businessman from Spain offered Pound 25000 to buy him. Like other celebs Paul too had competition in the game of prophecy. The prominent soothsayers competing with Paul were Leon, the porcupine, Petty, the piggy hippopotamus, Anton, the tamarind, Mani, the parakeet, chimpanzee Pino and African Red River hog. Even members of his clan were in the fray. Octopus Pauline of Holland, Octopus xiaoge of China were also competing with Paul. All competitors faltered in their prophecy in choosing the winning team but it was Paul the great who never disappointed his fans and succeeded in announcing the winning team correctly.
Stefan Porwell from Sea Life has said “we may decide to give Paul his own small burial plot within our grounds and erect a modest permanent shrine". Rumours are making rounds that a temple will be built in the memory of Paul Baba. Who knows a few centuries from now Paul may attain Sainthood and be worshipped by football loving fans? Football matches will be held for winning Octopus trophy.
In all fairness, Paul deserves a rich tribute. May his soul rest in peace and his tribe thrive to commemorate his achievements in all future world cups.
