The celebrations for the fiftieth anniversary of the first meeting between the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro and American writer Ernest Hemingway, began yesterday in Cojimar, Cuba; the small fishing village that inspired Hemingway to write the novel "The Old Man and the Sea".
Activities initiated with an exposition of drawings made by children, fishing gear donated by villagers, photographs and allegorical paintings of Ernest Hemingway and his relationship with the town, located in east Havana. A wreath was also laid before the bust of Hemingway.
Inaury Portuondo, museum specialist who gave the opening speech, stated: "The American writer has honored the poverty-stricken fishermen and the old "sea dogs" of this community, with his award winning novel" referring to the "The Old Man and the Sea" a publication the earned Hemingway the Pulitzer Prize in May of 1952.
The Cuban leader, and the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature met during the National Marlin Fishing Tournament held at Marlovento Marina on May 15th 1960.
