Officials at Denali National Park say a second person within a week has collapsed and died shortly after reaching the summit of Mount McKinley.
Park officials said Tuesday that 20-year-old Pungkas Tri Baruno (POON’-kas tree BAR’-oon-oh), of Jakarta, Indonesia, died Monday night while descending North America’s tallest mountain.
Officials say Baruno collapsed about 440 yards from a camp at the 17,200-foot level. Climbing guides unsuccessfully tried to revive Baruno.
Baruno and his climbing group began their ascent of the 20,320-foot mountain June 22. Park spokeswoman Maureen McLaughlin says he reached the summit on Monday.
A 51-year-old Illinois man died Friday at the summit, the first known climber to have died there.
