2008 exam results: Almost half of all Mexican Police Officers fail

POLITICS. .

In 2008, over 5700 official drug related deaths have been registered; officially, the body count is unknown. Why is this happening? Apart from the cartels warring over territory while simutaneously waging war against the government's crackdown, corruption lurks in every seedy corner of the Mexican security and judicial agency. The very men and women who are paid by the State to protect us, are paid by the Cartels to kidnap and or kill us. We are, quite simply, sleeping with the enemy.

Almost half of Mexican police officers examined this year have failed background and security tests, a figure that rises to nearly nine of 10 officers in the border state of Baja California, the government reported.

Nationwide, 49% of officers scored "not recommendable" on the tests, compared with 42% that rated "recommendable." In Baja California, which includes Tijuana, a city riven by drug violence, about 89% failed, and only 4% were judged "recommendable."

The tests -- which involved lie detectors, drug tests, psychological profiling and tests of personal wealth -- were intended to root out corrupt, incompetent and unfit officers. The report did not break down how many officers failed each category.

Where's the hope? What's the solution? For the recommendable 42%, the answer is clear: Support them, protect them and their families and give them all the incentives necessary to keep fighting for our lives. But what de we do with the 49% across the nation that failed this exam?

In many towns, entire corrupt local police forces have been disarmed and removed from duty. In others, partial forces have been placed on 30-60 day unpaid suspension. State police and military troops now patrol most major cities. My question, however, is what are they going to do with the corrupt forces. Obviously they bcame double agents due to minimal finances, now that they have no income, where does one expect them to end up?

Is there any way to ever end the corruption? Mexico is teetering on the brink of a failed state, where are the answers? It seems as though we are faced with a lose-lose situation. Wonderful that we have the statistics; now what the hell do we do? Decisions must be made..... before it's too late.
