122-Year-Old Serving Soldiers Voted Last year!

POLITICS. .

Well, if the headline got your attention, then it was meant to.

According to an audit of the voters’ roll in the Masvingo area of Zimbabwe, there were 500 ghost voters - one of them a serving soldier aged 122 years of age - that cast their vote in March last year.

If I was 122 years of age, one of the last things I would be thinking of is casting a vote, especially in a politically lop-sided country like Zimbabwe - and certainly not for Mugabe or any or his underlings.

But the fact remains, that the roll has many ghost voters and these were used to not only win seats in the general election, but to 'confirm' Mugabe as President of Zimbabwe following a sham one-man second round run-off…

"Evidence has emerged that Zimbabwe’s voters’ roll is in total shambles amid revelations that in Masvingo Urban Constituency alone 500 soldiers, some allegedly as old as 122 years, voted in last year’s harmonised elections.

According to an audit of the voters' roll conducted by the mainstream MDC of Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai in Masvingo Urban Constituency 500 ghost voters purported to be registered as soldiers at Four Brigade Headquarters voted during the March 29 harmonised elections.

The audit also revealed that scores of people who are not resident in Masvingo Urban, including some who are deceased, are still registered on the voters’ roll. The finding has generated fears that the situation might be replicated or worse in other parts of the country.

Documents at hand show that 500 ghost voters, some purportedly born in 1887 and enlisted at the army barracks, managed to cast their vote."

And what is even more surprising is that the pro-Mugabe Zimbabwean Electoral Commission declared the election "free and fair"!

What is "free and fair" about having ghost voters on the roll, and then having them vote?

But Mugabe doesn’t care about such small details. He 'won' the election and is not the President of Zimbabwe, and since he believes that possession in nine tenths of the law, well, that’s it really…

Nothing is done, nothing will be done and the subterfuge will be swept under the carpet. It will make no difference.

Reports like this need more exposure to show the world the nature of Mugabe’s 'democracy'.

Not only should the voters' roll be forensically audited, but the land grab needs to be exposed for what it really is - Mugabe looking after the senior members of his party. It has nothing to do with 'returning the land to the people'.

Furthermore, the financial dealings (and misdealings) of the Mugabe regime dating back to 1980 need to not only be audited, but a QDE (Questioned Document Examiner) should be contracted in to verify every piece of paper.

Where fraud and forgery are present, those responsible for the crime should be dragged before a court of law (not one pandering to the pro-Mugabe camp) and punished for their actions.

"The MDC-T party has unearthed serious anomalies on the voters’ roll in Masvingo Urban Constituency alone following an audit which revealed that ghost voters are still on the voters roll," reads the audit report in part.

"This is just a tip of the iceberg since the situation might have been very serious in other constituencies country wide."

But will the free world take heed of these reports? If they did, they are not doing very much about it. Perhaps the Zimbabwean crisis is not as important as we would hope it to be.

At the very least we should be reading headlines that celebrate the existence of 122-year-old voters in Zimbabwe, but alas - not one word.
