A group of 11 Mexican soldiers were killed in an Army Air Force helicopter accident near the town of San Miguel del Alto, in Santiago Papasquiaro, Durango. The incident apparently was caused by weather conditions in the area.
The Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA) announced that the accident occurred Friday night when the troops were being transported to perform actions within the framework of the Permanent Campaign Against Drug Trafficking and the implementation of the Federal Law of Arms and Explosives.
SEDENA made a public statement announcing:
"at approximately 22:40 hours on June 18 2010, near the town of San Miguel del Alto, a Bell 412 helicopter, with the registration number 1208, belonging to the Mexican Air Force, which was transporting troops from the Badiraguato military base in Sinaloa to military installations in 5 de Mayo, Durango crashed. "Unfortunately this accident killed a Chief Commander, four officers and six elements of troops, the preliminary data which we have so far indicates that the incident was due to adverse weather conditions in the area." -SEDENA
SEDENA offered their condolences and further reported the families of the deceased would be provided with the appropriate support and benefits of which they are entitled.
Generals, Commanders, Officers and all troops of the Mexican Army and Air Force, join in the sympathy and condolences of our Commander In Chief, Maestro Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, President of the Republic, for the families of our comrades in arms who lost their lives while fulfilling their call of duty. "
