Dowry- a social evil

The most common reason which results in the destruction of many homes that would have otherwise bubbled with life is dowry which is considered to be one of the evils of our society. Have you ever thought how those young women feels that enters into her wedlock with a lot of dreams but has to ultimately sacrifice her life just for the sake of dowry?

Today women are as competent and successful as the men but isn’t it ironical that at one side we are asking for the equal rights for both men and women and on the other side women are burnt and they have to sacrifice their life just for the sake of dowry? In the ancient times women were considered as goddesses but these goddesses are just regarded as a means to become rich by the men folk. The most ironical part is that instead of being a voluntary act, dowry has become an essential condition for marriage which means that the groom is literally sold on the wedding day.victimes of dowry 15697

No doubt, certain laws have been passed like the Dowry Abolition Act, 1961,and certain societies like the International Society Against Dowry Abuse and Bride-Burning in India (ISADABBI ) have been formulated but all the efforts made in this sphere goes in vain since dowry still has its roots in our present society.

The reason for its prevalence is that we ourselves do not want to get rid of this abusive system. Why don’t we women prove ourselves and raise our voice collectively against this injustice done to us. I am sure once we rise in revolt, nobody will have the guts to sell us in marriage. So, why not rise and up and preserve the sacredness of love and not consider it as a means to become rich.

Let us take a pledge that we will not give or take dowry. Remember, “Together we can and we will make a difference”.
