Democracy is for sale in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu is expected to go through Local-body elections on October 13 and 15. Indian Express has reported that the posts of Panchayat presidents, vice-presidents, and municipal and town Panchayat ward members, in the several villages, are on the auctions.

There are the reports coming that biddings for the different posts have already taken place in several villages and in several districts such as Madurai, Krishnagiri, Namakkal and Vellore. The cost of one post of Panchayat president is Rs 6 lakh.

Indian Express has reported that an All India Forward Bloc worker, Kanda Thevar Bose, is the highest bidder. He got the seat of the Panchayat president in Ayyanarkulam village, in Madurai district. He paid 6 lakh to contest the post unopposed.

Kanda Thevar Bose, the sitting Panchayat president, said to IE,

the villagers wanted me to spend money for the development of the village. An auction was held in the village and I won the auction. Five persons participated in the auction in front of villagers. The money will go to temple funds and village welfare funds.

When the district administration heard about the bidding, it chased away the crowd. Then the auction conducted in the moving vehicle.

The other auctions for village panchayat presidents’ posts were reported to be held in Rasakkapatti and Vadakaatupatti villages in Madurai too.
