When the family of Syed Abdul Fateh, who lost his life in the suicide attacks on the twin Towers of the World Trade Center trusted his younger brother Syed Rehman to look after them, he betrayed their trust.

Abdul had six children, his eldest daughter was 17 and eldest son was 16 at the time of his death since all the children were minor and his wife Shahtaj Banu could not go to US to process the papers and transactions because according to their religious conventions the wife is forbidden from stepping out of the house and speaking to others for four months and 10 days from the time of her husband’s death. Rehman was handed over the power of attorney as her husband trusted him. He used some of the compensation money to fly to US for a couple of times. He was made trustee of the Children’s compensation fund till they reached majority.

But the most of the compensation amount of more than one crore was transfered from the children’s account in JP Morgan bank to the personal account of their uncle Rehman.

Also Rs 35000/- the insurance amount sent monthly by deceased Abdul company every month is not being given to the children. Apparently Rehman only gives them day to day expenses since 2001.

The poor widow has been running from post to pillar, trying to settle this matter involving her brothers, even the mosque authorities but to no avail. Now she has reported this matter to police in Bangalore.

Naturally Rehman is denying all these allegations he expressed surprise and claimed that he was handing all the money to the family.

It seems money, lots of it can overcome the scruples of one’s conscience.
