Deliciousness and spiders don’t seem to go together, but people who have eaten fried spiders in Cambodia vouch for this delicacy. Garlic and salt are used to season the spiders which are deep fried, and can be the size of your fist.The butter used to fry them adds to the taste. Many come from far to eat these spiders, which were first consumed by people driven to starvation during Pol Pot’s regime. The snack is said to be gooey inside and crispy outside, which does sound really tasty!

Balut is a Filipino snack which has divided food aficionados into two categories – lovers and haters. Some people love the taste of the fertilized egg which has been fertilized for 18 days and have just-formed bird beak, wings and veins inside. It’s a popular street food and doubles as sophisticated restaurant fare as well. It lends itself to being a meaty soup with yolk which Balut lovers find irresistible. Guess you’d have to eat it to know whether you hate it or love it.

Don’t be mistaken that Century eggs are centuries old. They are eggs which are preserved in a briny solution for a few months or sometimes, a couple of weeks. Chicken, quail and duck eggs are soaked in the solution which may have rice hulls, quicklime and ash. The egg white turns into dark jelly and the yolk has a cheesy, creamy texture. Sounds yummy!
