Army is there to defend the country and countrymen but these days the Indian military is battling against itself. The armed men/ women are committing suicides, few are killing their fellow officers, others involved in social and civilian crimes. Is it what we expect of our army? No indeed, Indian army has won battles for the country, shielded the nation from outside scavengers, saved the civilians in times of natural calamity, than why are we finding our army in controversy now. There are reasons galore, many misunderstood.
The life of an armed officer be it male or female is replete with rigor, demanding a lot of hard work, discipline and patience on the part of our military. In such situation battling the pressure is of utmost importance for any army officer. And in order to fight pressures one needs family, but most of the life of a services officer is spent without their family nearby increasing stress in their life. After all, a life away from home is always difficult, and there is hardly a person on earth who is not homesick.
For a woman army officer life is double difficult. One, being a female she has not just to look after her duty but also protect her self-respect and honor. Second, a woman officer is paid less in terms of remuneration as compared to their male counterparts that creates differences between the two. After all belonging to the weaker sex, a female has to bear the indifference from her male officers. Than posting in such areas that cuts off every link with the society can be a reason for many officers caving under pressure. While few female officers can themselves become victims of crimes against women such as rape and physical assault.Family life of women officers remains all the more disturbed as being away from home secludes them from their family, and they are unable to concentrate on their near and dear ones.
Researches have shown that humiliating treatment meted out to the junior officers by their seniors has forced many defense personnel end either their life or kill their tormentors. Because they have no option, neither they can leave the army nor face their seniors. Either they have to bear the embarrassment at the hands of their seniors or end to their humiliating life. At testing times, soldiers may give in to pressure forcing them to commit suicide.
Life being an armed personnel is really very tough. These days with the increasing use of modern warfare weapons many are unwilling to join the forces. But, being in the services commands respect from the society. I salute my armed forces for all the good work they have done for the country and countrymen till today. But, the increasing number of cases like rape, brutality, and harsh treatment to the civilians involving the military personnel is tarnishing the image of our services. The matter requires utmost attention and the army needs to find a quick and lasting solution.
